Get involved with the Love Your Yarn Shop Campaign!

This new campaign will raise the profile of yarn shops and encourage knitters to support their local store

On Saturday 3rd May 2014 yarn shops across the UK will be celebrating Yarn Shop Day, the climax of months of activity from the Love Your Yarn Shop campaign launched by leading publications Let’s Knit and Let’s Get Crafting.

The event, the first of its kind, is supported by the industry, and with extensive media coverage behind it promises to boost the profile of bricks and mortar yarn stores. Each store that signs up to the campaign is encouraged to host its own special events to draw in consumers, including anything from free tea and cake to star appearances by big industry names. Rolling coverage in magazines such as Let’s Knit, Let’s Get Crafting, Craft Business, Homemaker and Crafts Beautiful and on their accompanying social media platforms will reach a huge number of consumers. It’s a chance for yarn shops to remind their customers of the fantastic, irreplaceable, personal service they provide.

Says Let’s Knit editor Sarah Neal: “As knitters ourselves we know the value of a good yarn store. As well as providing the unequalled pleasure of buying yarn off the shelf, they offer experienced face-to-face advice and are often a communal meeting place for like minded crafters. The Love Your Yarn Shop campaign is aimed at alerting consumers to the benefits of supporting these stores.”

Let’s Get Crafting editor, Ella Johnston, agrees, adding: “We know that the crafty com- munity will really get behind Love Your Yarn Shop and Yarn Shop Day and look forward to cel- ebrating our local stores – a truly valuable resource for knitters and crocheters.”

Craft Business editor, Zoe Monk adds: “Many yarn stores now run classes and knit-and- natter sessions, and I really think that there is much more to the whole experience of knitting and crochet than just the pleasure of creating. People love to get together and share their creative passion in a friendly and encouraging environment, and this is exactly where the local yarn shop can excel.”

Christmas Fair 2013- the best yet!!!

This year Cheam’s Christmas fair was definitely the best yet. Local police estimate the crowd this year to have been between 3500-4500 visitors throughout the evening which is an unbelievable turn out in comparison with last years’ estimated 2500.

The fairground netted almost double what they did last year and provided some great rides and treats for the children to enjoy.

Cheam’s young one’s also had some great times seeing Santa on his horse and cart and then in Whitehall where they could relay what they would like for Christmas. We all have faith that Santa can make them all happen, apart from Abbie Townsend aged 5’s wish for a pink unicorn, apologies Abbie.

We as a community owe massive thanks to Smyth & Byford for providing so much this year, in particular Radio Jackie which made the evening flow and even bought us snow!

We had some excellent carol singing from St. Dunstan’s Church of England school choir, some budding performers in that group.

Lots of children got involved in Cheam Sports Shop’s Disney treasure hunt where everyone won a prize!

The Village Travel shop also hosted a raffle which was later drawn by MP Paul Burstow and saw lots of prize winners who benefited from fantastic prizes from gift vouchers to candles.

Characters from the current panto ‘Dick Whittington and his amazing cat’ (at the Seycombe Theatre) paraded around the village in full costume alongside Queenie the famous Chihuahua who has been getting friendly with community policing in her LED lit crystal encrusted pink buggy.

Cheam Baptist Church hosted an impressive evening with organ music, a selection of Christmas carols and festive musical melodies ending with festive jazz.

Finally we owe the biggest thank you to Tim Vine for sparing time in his busy schedule to turn on Cheam’s Christmas lights at no benefit to himself. His speech was hilarious, made all the funnier by Sutton Council having already turned the majority of lights on. Watch the video on Tim’s speech here:

  • 15:00 – Parking bay suspensions in Station Way.
    – Stalls & Fairground rides start setting up.
  • 16:30 – Radio Jackie begins setting up.
  • 17:00 – Road Closure commences, Station Way
  • 17:30 – Radio Jackie 107.8FM Begins Broadcasting.
    – Radio Jackie is very generously sponsored today by Smith & Byford.
    – Fair ground rides in Station Way
    – Stalls throughout the Village
    – selling Garden Ornaments, Skincare and Cosmetic items, Wooden Toys and Decorations, Indonesian Fairtrade goods, Pet Products, Food and Treats, Jewellery, Cards and Stationery, Soaps, Drinks, Christmas Decorations etc, etc.
    – Horse & Carriage Rides in The Broadway, from Frith Pharmacy.
    – Children’s Disney Treasure Hunt
    – Everyone wins a prize. Collect £1.00 Entry Forms from Cheam Sports shop.
  • 18:00 – St. Dunstan’s Church of England Primary School Choir
    – sing Christmas carols beside Radio Jackie outside Lloyds Bank.

    – Christmas organ music recital – open house.
  • 18:15 – TIM VINE at Cheam Library Memorial Green.
    – Stand-up comedian, actor, writer, presenter and Cheam resident (best known for his TV role in Not Going Out). Tim will explain why Cheam Village is so special.
  • 18:30 – Tim Vine turns on the Christmas Lights.
    – Watch as Cheam’s new Christmas lights come alive through the Village.
    – Guest appearance from Queenie the Chihuahua.
  • 19:15 – Cheam Baptist Church Operatic Open Evening.
    – A selection of Christmas carols and festive musical melodies, followed by.
  • 20:00 – Festive Jazz, also at Cheam Baptist Church.
  • 20:30 – Shops and Stalls begin to close.
  • 21:00 – End of road closure in Station Way.
